View looking Northeast from roof of office building, 66 Broadway, 1890s (reduced in size)

These photographs in and around New York were published as a collection in 1900 although the photographs themselves had been taken over a few years prior to that date.

Although originals of these 46 rare photographs are very difficult to find, you can now get them on a cd-rom prepared from original 19th century items held in a private collection.  This cd-rom isn't mass produced but is compiled individually and personally for each purchaser so few copies exist.  You can get one of them here.

A few sample images are set out below, followed by a complete list of all the views.

Union Square - looking Northwest from Corner Fourth Avenue and Fourteenth Street, 1890s (reduced in size)

The Casino and Knickerbocker Theater - Broadway, Thirty-ninth to Thirty-eighth Street, 1890s (reduced in size)

Herald Building - Herald Square, Broadway, Sixth Avenue, and Thirty-fifth Street, 1890s (reduced in size)

Metropolitan Club - Northeast Corner Fifth Avenue and Sixtieth Street, 1890s (reduced in size)

These rare views show you how much New York has changed in the last hundred years.  Compare these views with what you can see today ...
